so i’m researching how to market Hybrid Elephant better than i have been (which is not at all), and i discovered, or, rather, i rediscovered that Hybrid Elephant has a web stats program already installed on the web server, so i decided to have a look. the last time i checked the stats was in november 2003(!), shortly after my injury. since then Hybrid Elephant has been averaging somewhere between 35,000 and 75.000 hits per month, or around 6,000 hits per week (the week of 6 november, 2005 had almost 35,000 hits!), and the weeks starting 11 december, 2005 had an average of 7,500 hits per week! my busiest day is usually tuesday, and the busiest hour of the busiest day is usually 12:00 pm, the most recent of which had 14,172 requests for pages. the large majority of hits (34.56%) come from the .net TLD, followed by 30.93% from the .com TLD, 16.12% from “unresolved numerical addresses”(?), and 2.74% from the .edu TLD… i’ve gotten 10,230 hits from the .uk TLD, 13,601 from the .hr TLD (croatia!), and i’ve even had 332 hits from the .arpa TLD… and i’ve gotten 1 hit each from andorra, macedonia, lichtenstein and cote d’ivoire… strangely enough, though, the most frequently requested directory is the objects directory (probably the murtis or the pipes, which i’ve gotten a bunch of emails about), and the incense directory comes in a disappointing #4… i’m pretty sure i’ll be able to make some use out of this information. what remains to be seen.

my former boss couldn’t tell the difference between an application like pagemaker, indesign, firefox, internet exploder or outlook express, from the operating system… i had to explain to him several times (before he made it impossible for me to install it again) that indesign was an application which you had to start separately, every time you booted the computer… 8/
That would drive me insane. My other boss, who uses the computer a bit hasn’t figured out that firfox has tabs with all the websites we use pulled up as home pages. Or that you don’t have to print all 4 pages of the email orders that we get, just the first page. But she is:
a)signs my paycheck
b)is my landlord
c)is incredibly nice.
The contrast between my too bosses is amazing. in theory I have one other, but he just hangs out and acts like a guru in the steam room.
right… in other words, he allows you (implicitly and/or explicitly) to make important decisions about how the computer is used… imagine a guy like your boss, who is so protective of his computers that he does stuff like i mentioned previously, because he doesn’t know how important it is to see things like the file extensions, won’t allow me to install something which functions better and more reliably than internet exploder or outlook express, and didn’t even know that he had over 150 separate virus processes on his machine before i came in and disinfected him… 8/
He can’t even turn the thing on. Like I said, He thinks its a magical device. Think about a Jock in the 1960’s doing acid and then opening a massage parlor/metaphysical bookstore/church. He has many strange ideas.
He told me recently I couldn’t tell anyone about Bookfinder.com. He said it was “proprietary information”.
HELLO NIMROD!! IT’S A SEARCH ENGINE!!! IT”S HOW THE CUSTOMERS FIND OUR BOOKS!!
He kills me. His knowledge of computers is what he has gleamed from new age books published in the 70-80’s like this or this Check out the publication dates. I giggled like a fiend when I put those on the database.
i need better google ranking in the categories of my products… when you enter “hybrid elephant” into google, mine is the first page, but when you type in “incense” i don’t show up in the first 20 pages of links… which is kinda disappointing… that’s why i’m researching ways to market that don’t involve spamming people to death.
you’ve got a link… that’s the advantage of working for myself, at home. 8)
i used to work for a guy with ideas like that… he fired me in october, because of a lack of a sound business policy which he was in charge of creating, but hadn’t since before i started working for him. instead, he actually wanted to make my job more difficult by restricting access to the network, restricting who could install software on the computers – which he knows nothing about – making the “default” for windows the way it looks when you first install it – meaning no file extensions, large icon view, etc., etc…. hopefully you work for someone who is less insane than that.
yeah I’ll post one for you, I’m always looking for a slightly higher google ranking. typing “peace of mind” and “books” gives you all sorts of strange results on google. My boss thinks that that should lead directly to us. hahahaha. He’s insane and thinks that a computer is a magick device that can do anything you want it too.
the stats program is analog, and it’s available for unix, linux, and mac (it’s probably available for windows servers as well, but why?), and it’s really easy to use…
you want to trade links?
At least your site gives you stats like that. The site I manage (Peace of Mind Bookstore)only gives me the number of hits and then raw data. There’s no way to sort it. It’s a great big list of IP addresses and the pages they visited. We don’t sell our statues and incense and stuff online, just our books. The herb and oil listings are merely to make my boss be quiet. Seeing how I am the intirety of the internet staff (heh, I also am the only bookstore employee 4 out of 7 days) I’m so terribly glad I don’t have to package and mail incense and stuff.
As for promoting your site, I recommend getting as many links to your site as you can con folks into giving you.
