rye

rye has left us. it was time. his back legs were failing, which has been the case pretty much ever since he had his neck surgery, a couple of years ago.

i was there when he was born, and i was there as he breathed his last breath. he was a really good dog, and he’s going to leave a big hole in our lives. 😭

he was the first of four puppies, and he was the largest, which is why the puppies had to be born by caesarian section. i always thought he should have been named “Plug”, but moe says he needed a more dignified name.

this is the house i live in… 🤣

we have adopted a “pet” starling, named Clarice.

she was a nestling, who was rescued from a cat by a colleague of moe’s, a couple of months ago, and, because of the fact that european starlings are an “invasive species”, if we had taken her to wildlife rescue, she would have been euthanised… and, it turns out that she doesn’t fly particularly consistently, which means that if we just released her, she would probably become someone’s lunch, pretty quickly…

so she has been going to work with moe, during the day, and we have a coop for her to sleep in, at night… but she still follows moe around like… well, like a little bird. about half of her “following moe around” is done on the ground, because she doesn’t fly particularly consistently. she flies, but it’s only fairly short distances, and she prefers flying up to things, because flying down is harder…

starlings are very smart, and can be taught human speech, like parrots. we’re teaching her to say “hello, clarice.” 😉 which is even more amusing because of the fact that i have NEVER SEEN the movie “Silence of The Lambs” (i’ve seen clips, but not the entire movie).

mozart had a pet starling.

sigh… this again… 🙄

i “met” this person with the gender-non-conforming name (female, with a typically-male name) on livejournal, shortly after my injury. she was an artist, and a single mother, and we had a fair amount in common. we eventually became about as good friends as could be managed, given that we lived in different states and only interacted on internet. then the Big Bois with Pois were in the second round of callbacks for AGT season 7 (a video of the important moments of our performance is there for those of you who are interested), and i actually got to meet her in person. then she had to move away, and we continued to interact on internet, first through my leaving livejournal, then her move to pennsylvania, and then to georgia. while she was in georgia, she became entranced with “AI-generated” art, something which i have been EXTREMELY skeptical about, since i first learned about it.

okay, this is a brief description of my reasoning for disliking “AI-generated” art. from an artistic point of view: all the people look more or less the same, there is no natural variation, and they ALWAYS get the hands wrong. it makes people think that they are much better artists than they might actually be. instead of practicing an art form, to get better at, for example, rendering the human form, they are practicing creating inputs that better, and better relate to ideas they have in their head, but don’t necessarily have the skill to reproduce themselves. from an intellectual point of view: it makes people “think” that “they” are the artist, even though the artwork is only based on their inputs, and not on their actual skill. with artwork generated by LLMs, the artwork actually comes from millions of scans of ALREADY EXISTING artwork, by OTHER PEOPLE, which is then remixed according to some inputs, and then presented as entirely new artwork, “created” by the person who made the inputs. from a practical point of view: AI is, basically, bad at everything, creates brain atrophy, and destroys the planet.

eventually, it got to the point where i actually broke off contact with this person, because, as an artist, i couldn’t understand why ANOTHER ARTIST would purposely use other people’s art to “create” her own art, without properly identifying the people who created the originals on which her “artwork” is based. it was a tough decision, and i lost a good friend because of it, but it had to be done.

all this happened a few years ago, and i thought that was going to be the end of it.

until, today, i got a text message from ANOTHER old friend (someone i have known since we were in college), who is also an artist, who, apparently has ALSO recently got entranced by “AI-generated” art. 😒

i responded very negatively to her text message, to which she replied “not gonna share my art with you any more.” 🙄 i replied “you can share YOUR art, i’m just not interested in seeing other people’s art, remixed and mis-attributed.”

i really hope this isn’t going to cost me ANOTHER friend… 😒

post-OCF update

i remember when i first attended OCF, i was kind of irritated that macque and simon were getting us involved in YET ANOTHER “old boys'” network. i remember the first two or three years, thinking i was REALLY lucky to have gotten involved at this level.

it was REALLY hot… although it wasn’t NEARLY as hot as last year, it was still in the high-80s to high-90s fahrenheit. it made coming home to a cool, air-condioned(!) house REALLY amazing… it was also REALLY dusty, and, because of the fact that there wasn’t even a hint of dew, much less actual rain, everything that could, got clogged with dust. also, the ravenous hoards of mosquitoes were not as ravenous or hoard-like as they have been in the past, and i got a FEW bites, but not anywhere near as many as in previous years.

now, i’ve applied for elder status: it has been TWENTY YEARS of going to OCF every (FUCKING) year (except for 2020 and 2021, when nobody went to OCF because of COVID, and 2022, when my OCF was cancelled at the last possible moment because I GOT COVID 😒) — once again, i’m thinking that OCF may have served its purpose, and it may be time to investigate other avenues… i’m not going to say i won’t go, because there’s a good chance that, given the opportunity, i will, but… it’s VERY MUCH LIKE a hot, dusty, mosquito-ridden swamp slash huge, overcrowded hippie-mall… i was there for a week and i didn’t shower. 😒 i haven’t been to the ritz since COVID, and the health-care professional in our group (an acupuncturist) said that i was a smart hippie for avoiding it.

pre-OCF update

all panto rehearsals prior to the “dress rehearsal” which has an audience, but happens at the fairgrounds, on thursday, prior to our opening on friday at noon, have been completed, including an “emergency”, last-minute, saturday rehearsal with just the band and king oswald, who hasn’t been as diligent about learning his lines as he has been in the past (😉). it is a fairly decent show, as long as everybody remembers their lines, and their entrances… which, i guess, is about as good as it can get, considering that we’re gearing up for a weekend of performances at the oregon country fair.

i turn 65 at the fair, this year, AND this year will be my 20th fair, which, technically, means that i am doubly eligible for “elder” status. what that means has yet to be fully divulged to me, but my recollection is that there is a separate “elders” booth at registration, and it’s my impression that, if anybody could tell me, they could. 😉 also, this year i actually have a legitimate, legal handicapped placard that is MINE, which SHOULD mean that i get to park closer to the stage than i could in the past… but that has yet to be seen.

most of my list of stuff to bring to the fair has been assembled, and the significant deficiencies are mainly clothing and medication related stuff — and, yes, i include “illegal” drugs such as mushrooms and cannabis in the latter category. 🤓 i’m probably not going to start packing clothes until tuesday evening, before which i intend to do massive amounts of laundry, in hopes of getting enough ahead of it that i can go away for five days without causing problems for monique, later in the week.

despite all this meticulous planning, i am still feeling a sense of unknown dread, because of all of the things i know COULD go wrong. i wish it would go away. 😒

in other news, all three clones are looking like they’re going to make it, which means at least one more round of space queen, eventually, and, potentially, many more. 😉 but i’ve got NINE other plants (two space queen, from last year’s seeds, four starts from darol, and three starts from tracy), all of which are outside, which are doing PHENOMENALLY well, so it looks like i’m well on my way to never having to HAVE to buy weed ever again. and, TECHNICALLY — according to the terms of my permit — i could have three MORE plants without violating any laws. 😎

we live in phenomenally strange times, when weed is legal, but fluoridated water is not. 😵🙄
