the four CDs worth of Holy Modal Rounders mp3s that i was waiting for yesterday didn’t come through for some, unknown reason (which is very sad indeed), but the other stuff did.

except some of them were mp3s and some of them were FLAC files, and the only player i have that understands FLAC is on windoesn’t – only this time it’s the only thing that does for a change. is there a way to convert FLAC to mp3, or something that is compatible with my ipod? i realise that FLAC is infinitely preferable (yes, i have ears), but as far as i can tell, i can’t put FLACs in my ipod, and i really would like to take this music with me, rather than having to carry around my windows box for one album…

  1. ha, nah I’m alright. My linux instal got as far as not recognising my widescreen monitor the first time with Fedora, then Ubuntu going mad with everything else next and refusing to deal with my hard drives correctly. Plus I have an ati graphics card and the gaming community I belong to won’t take kindly to dodgy ati drivers until they catch up to the nvidia offerings speed!

I’m stuck with windows XP right now simply for the wealth of video/audio software I can use with it for making/editing media and making life worthwhile as a result 🙂

  2. it turns out that there is a filter for cool edit, which i downloaded. now cool edit will recognise FLAC files and i can convert them myself.

you want a copy anyway? 8)

  3. the problem with converting them on linux is that i don’t have a sound card, so there’s no way to check and make sure that the CD on which i’ve got the files will also be read correctly by linux… 8/

  4. i was afraid that was going to happen. i have them on a CD (which both my windows box and my Os9 mac read) and the file names are messed up – typical 8+3 MS-DOS-style names. there’s no codec for Os9, however my windows machine still recognises them as FLAC files anyway… damn windoesn’t!

i’ve got a codec for XMPLAY, but i can’t save files as a different format with that app. i’ve also got cooledit, which i use for converting .aif and .wav to .mp3, but it doesn’t recognise the files. the bit torrent is gone, too… 8/

  5. Bad News! I have installed flac codec to work with a couple of rippers and the files in the zips are not flac, or even audio files. The filenames were messed up too. I tried renaming them and they came up as read only files, but I managed to rename, although they still weren’t recognised as audio files 🙁

You’ll have to install the flac codec from sourceforge with a player on your system, see if any convertors available will convert flac to mp3 or otherwise use a desktop recording program and play the files, saving the desktop “what i hear” audio as mp3 (and silence all messengers!)

Googling is producing a lot of entries for audio convertors for linux so you shouldn’t have a major issue getting one to work.

This reminds me of my recent brush with Linux and the problems I encountered just trying to install it!

  6. that would be outrageous… the problem i’m having is that the platform on which i am most likely to be able to do the conversion is my linux box, which doesn’t have a sound card. i’d bite the bullet and get jetaudio, except that windoesn’t is my least favourite platform and i simply don’t feel that it’s worth the effort, in spite of the fact that it’s currently the only place i can do the conversion, so any help would be greatly appreciated…

and, of course, you can keep the FLAC files as a bonus. it’s the first album by The Insect Trust called “The Insect Trust”- if it’s what you listen to, i also have the second album, “Hoboken Saturday Night”, which i’m willing to share. you can download it here:

  7. The retail “VX” version of Jetaudio for windows can, with FLAC codec installed, convert to mp3. FLAC is probably the best quality codec on the market, but more for specialists ot use, not the average person.

Dependent on your having jetaudio and access to windows, you can do it. Otherwise you could email me the files and I’ll convert to mp3 and send them back to you? How large are the files? you might have to send one per email or something, or better still upload them to rapidshare.com and then give me the links to them and I will convert and reupload back there for you to download (or your alternative file hosting service of course)
