recently, i got a text message that included the following graphic:
my FIRST response was:
“if my iphone is locked, how do they expect me to call them?”
🤣
seriously, let’s look at that graphic and find out how many indications that it might not be legitimate we can find, okay? it says “order confirmed”, but it also talks about how that order is “illegal”, and yet it doesn’t do anything to prevent it. it doesn’t address me by name, which is something that all LEGITIMATE communications from apple feature. it has inconsistent capitalisation of random words, not always at the beginning of sentences. it talks about a PornHub subscription for “child pornography” when PornHub DOES NOT feature child pornography. the phone number labeled “Apple Support” is in the 802 area code, which is barre, vermont — which doesn’t matter, anyway, because the phone number has been bulk-purchased, and is in use in india or pakistan, which is where their call centers are located — then there’s the BIG TELL, which is that, if my iphone is locked, it should be IMPOSSIBLE for me to make a telephone call ANYWHERE… geez, folks… use your brain for something other than a hat-rack! 🙄 then there is the last bit, which is basically the same thing as the first bit, but without some pesky grammar rules to mess it up… run on sentences, incorrect capitalisation, contradictory imperatives, another “not you?”, and a repeat of the phone number that is NOT in cupertino, california… what doesn’t show is that the text message came from a phone number that starts with +212 which means that it is located in morocco… that adds up to fifteen individual things that are suspicious about this graphic. i don’t know about you, but i was convinced after two… 😒
recently, my mother-in-law got an IDENTICAL scam text message. her response? PANIC!! 😱 she texted moe, who texted back that if she is texting her, then her phone is working fine. 😒
i gave my mother-in-law a printed flyer alerting her about THIS SPECIFIC SCAM, not more than a week ago. she said she would read it, but… i guess she didn’t… 🙄
