groan!

recently, i got a text message that included the following graphic:

260427 scam text message inclusion
260427 scam text message inclusion

my FIRST response was:

“if my iphone is locked, how do they expect me to call them?”

🤣

seriously, let’s look at that graphic and find out how many indications that it might not be legitimate we can find, okay? it says “order confirmed”, but it also talks about how that order is “illegal”, and yet it doesn’t do anything to prevent it. it doesn’t address me by name, which is something that all LEGITIMATE communications from apple feature. it has inconsistent capitalisation of random words, not always at the beginning of sentences. it talks about a PornHub subscription for “child pornography” when PornHub DOES NOT feature child pornography. the phone number labeled “Apple Support” is in the 802 area code, which is barre, vermont — which doesn’t matter, anyway, because the phone number has been bulk-purchased, and is in use in india or pakistan, which is where their call centers are located — then there’s the BIG TELL, which is that, if my iphone is locked, it should be IMPOSSIBLE for me to make a telephone call ANYWHERE… geez, folks… use your brain for something other than a hat-rack! 🙄 then there is the last bit, which is basically the same thing as the first bit, but without some pesky grammar rules to mess it up… run on sentences, incorrect capitalisation, contradictory imperatives, another “not you?”, and a repeat of the phone number that is NOT in cupertino, california… what doesn’t show is that the text message came from a phone number that starts with +212 which means that it is located in morocco… that adds up to fifteen individual things that are suspicious about this graphic. i don’t know about you, but i was convinced after two… 😒

recently, my mother-in-law got an IDENTICAL scam text message. her response? PANIC!! 😱 she texted moe, who texted back that if she is texting her, then her phone is working fine. 😒

i gave my mother-in-law a printed flyer alerting her about THIS SPECIFIC SCAM, not more than a week ago. she said she would read it, but… i guess she didn’t… 🙄

🙄

this is the last post about this for a while…

i’m getting a bit overwhelmed by the quantity of spam text messages i’ve been getting, recently, and it has bled over into this blog, which has never been my intent. nevertheless, i had to post this one as a particularly ridiculous attempt to steal my money.

this one was from a number in beaufort, south carolina — 854-279-7653, which, naturally, is a number that “hasn’t been set up” according to the automated recorded message i got — and the message said:

Your US Customs and Border Protection case ID is ZSDCG558674. Your shipment was seized due to a potential legal violation, which is presently being looked into. Contact the relevant authorities for more details. 1-805-609-6408

the number to call is in oxnard, california, and began with the — predictable — “hello, this is (whatever – in this case, “customs and border protection”) support, how may i assist you”…

and this is my recording of my call to them:

i wonder how many laws this is breaking? impersonating a federal law enforcement official, for sure… 🙄

in other news, Afroman won the lawsuit brought against him by the cops who raided his home in august of 2022, after he made a music video to help recoup some of the damages they caused in their futile attempt to drum up some charges against him. at least SOMEBODY is having a good time…

varoom???

so i’ve been indulging, recently, in baiting scammers (a PHENOMENALLY ENORMOUS waste of time, but whatever)… and the thing i really wonder is why they get so mad when i call them out… like, I am the one doing the wrong thing, here… never mind that what they’re TRYING to do is illegal and immoral (i’m not sure about fattening), and they should be tossed in jail for the rest of their natural born days… 😠 they cuss me out and say the most nasty things about me, and then they hang up before i get to ask them why they feel that way about me! 🤷

i’ve currently got 1,269 “unknown” numbers BLOCKED in my phone, which hasn’t slowed them down in the slightest. i got a spam text message, this morning, from “Morocco”, to get “Apple tech support”, for an “unauthorized P0rnhub.com purchase”, gave me a REALLY SKETCHY LOOKING URI to click on (which, significantly, was NOT “apple dot com”, but “luminous-cassata-02fac0 dot netify dot app” 🙄), or wanted me to call a number in Honolulu, Hawai’i. when i called that number, this happened:

they all start out the same. the mark sucker patsy OTHER PARTICIPANT says “Thank you for calling Apple support, my name is Kevin (or whatever), how can I help you today?”

salamandir: Hi Kevin, I’m wondering if you can tell me what it feels like to steal money from people?

Kevin: Go fuck yourself, mother fucker, son of a bitch!

to employ an aphorism from the ’70s, “well EXCUUUUUUUUUSE me!!!” 🙄

UPD

it’s weird… i can login using my linux box, but for some reason, i CAN’T login on my tablet, despite entering the same password, and my authenticator app LIVES ON my tablet… i think, ultimately, it’s going to take turning off 2FA, and then turning it back on, but i don’t want to do that… yet. 😒

we got two new budgies to go with our two less-new budgies. we’re naming them after characters on sesame street, because two of them (ernie and bert) “interact with the public” — i.e. they are “clinic pets” at the clinic monique works at — so calling them tony and tommy was… less desirable. 😉

the new ones are oscar and cookie monster — green and blue — to go with ernie and bert — “violet” (which looks blue to me) and yellow — and i’ve actually got sesame street finger puppets from when i was, probably, 10 to 12 years old…so, now we have a whole flock of budgies, which is good, because budgies live in flocks (in australia) in the wild, so that helps.

i’ve got another flare-up of “smoldering” diverticulitis. i recognise the symptoms in time to go get medication for it without going to the hospital, now, but it royally sucks having constant diarrhea. fortunately, unlike the last time, i am NOT in the middle of a performance, and my circus and unicycle classes are on break this week, so the “have to be out in public” parts of it are a lot less, but it doesn’t make it even the slightest bit more tolerable. 😒

the mornings full of spam text messages are back in full swing: anywhere from three to ten spam text messages between 06:00 and 11:00 or so, about 5 days out of 7. i now have over 1,200 blocked phone numbers on my phone, but that doesn’t stop ’em from coming up with new ones, every single day. and, i’m sorry to say that, at least they’ve got one thing right: americans, by and large, are the dumbest people i have ever met, and, if it is possible, i’m pretty sure they WOULD give scammers their money of their own accord, because, no kidding, folks, these scams are THE MOST OBVIOUS… messages from “8P-P-le Support” and “Ap-p-le support”, messages that contain the words “PrivacY, PoliCY”, messages from “Apple” with return addresses in Cork, Ireland, and a phone number in Rosco, Illinois, messages that claim “Your Apple ID was used at CHILD PORNOGRAPHY WEB SITE” which assure me that “Your IP will be BLACK LISTED SOON”, the person answering the “Apple support” line telling me that his name is “James T. Kirk”… the worst are the messages allegedly from “PayPal” which don’t address me by my full name, which is one of the things legitimate PayPal does to assure you that it is not a spam-scam. seriously! have you EVER known paypal to CALL YOU??? jeez! 🙄

one would really think that people would get the idea, eventually… 🙄

i’m reporting every single one to the phone company, apple, and the federal government, but none of them has resulted in THE SLIGHTEST decrease in their occurrence. 😒

finally, here’s some relatively new art:
